Individual and Couples Therapy in Washington, DC
Welcome! I believe that everyone has the ability to heal and grow. Therapy can help you navigate life's challenges, including anxiety, depression, grief, and more. It can also help you gain a better understanding of yourself and your relationships. This can lead to a greater sense of authenticity, meaning, and connection. Taking the step to start therapy reflects real strength. I invite you to explore my website to learn how we can work together.
Paul Higgins, JD, LICSW
I'm a psychotherapist in private practice in downtown Washington, DC, where I provide individual and couples therapy. I'm licensed in DC, and I offer in-person and virtual sessions.
Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, my work experience included working as a law firm attorney and serving as an arbitrator and mediator. These prior experiences inform my clinical work and give me insight into the challenges faced by professionals navigating demanding work environments.
I obtained my Master of Social Work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work, my law degree from The Catholic University of America, and my undergraduate degree from the University of New Hampshire.

I bring a warm, non-judgmental style to therapy, and work closely with each client to help them gain a deeper understanding of the challenges they are experiencing and discover ways to overcome them. I welcome and am affirming of clients from all backgrounds. My goal is for each client to find a path towards greater meaning, contentment, and connection in their lives.
I tailor my therapeutic approach to the client’s unique needs. My therapeutic approaches include psychodynamic (relational/self-psychology), cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), strengths-based, client-centered, humanistic, mindfulness, and attachment-based models. For couples therapy, I also draw from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Gottman Method Couples Therapy principles.

In individual therapy, I focus on helping you explore your experiences, thoughts, and feelings in a safe, supportive environment. Together, we will work through challenges, help you gain a better understanding of yourself and your relationships, and help you lead a more fulfilling life.

In couples therapy, I work with couples to help them strengthen their emotional and physical bond, enhance their ability to resolve conflicts, improve communication, and help them overcome other challenges in their relationship. Together we can work to identify and change problematic relationship dynamics and patterns.

I'm considered an out-of-network provider. I recommend that you contact your insurance carrier to see if any portion of my services will be covered and their out-of-network reimbursement rates. I will provide you with a monthly statement that you will be able to submit to your provider for out-of-network reimbursement. Services may be covered in part by your health insurance and in full by your flexible spending account. Please check your coverage carefully by asking the following questions:
